Bill's aim to save energy, money (new window)

It is disappointing that Sens. Evan Bayh and Richard Lugar voted against the Energy Independence and Security Act. By increasing fuel economy standards for the first time in decades and setting a national renewable electricity standard, the bill takes a historic step toward a new energy future.

By putting more fuel-efficient cars on the road and increasing our use of renewable energy, the bill was about creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, saving Indiana consumers $619 million at the gas pump and $265 million on their energy bills and making a downpayment on the fight against global warming.

More than ever, America needs a new direction on energy policy, but Indiana’s senators have failed to change course.
