Earth Week turns 40 - Indiana Daily Student (new window)

Since the first Earth Week in 1970, the United States has had many successes. We have the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act as well as a better understanding of environmental issues. Although it has become somewhat fashionable to care about these issues, there are still many things Americans can do to help the Earth. What can you do? This Earth Week, I want to share the three simplest environmental concepts: the three R’s.

One important aspect of college students’ lives is dealing with financial issues, even after graduation. A report from Indiana Public Interest Research Group, a public interest organization based at IU, stated that Indiana college students are facing unnecessary financial risks by relying on unregulated private student loans to pay for college. On average, students graduate with $3,556 in non-federal student loans.

Ultimately, and deep down, we care. We care about the state of the world and we sympathize with other human beings, both at home and abroad, who find themselves in less fortunate situations. Students participate in Food Stamp Challenge - Indiana Daily Student (new window)

Every day, one out of nine Americans uses food stamps. Last year alone, 644,281 Indiana residents utilized the food stamp program. This week, as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, two students decided to take part in Indiana Public Interest Research Group’s Food Stamp Challenge, which began Nov. 15 and will run until Saturday.

INPIRG lobbies Bayh for real-life changes - Indiana Daily Student (new window)

INPIRG wants to make Senator Evan Bayh their hero. Thursday, members of the Indiana Public Interest Research Group stood outside Ballantine Hall with an 8-foot cut-out of the Indiana Democrat. Bayh’s cut-out wore the uniform of 1990s TV environmental cartoon hero Captain Planet.

Carley Knapp responds to an IDS editorial on turning IU into a green campus, saying that becoming more sustainable is important but expressed concern that such changes might detract from students experiences at IU: "When such (environmental) measures are put into place, will students feel like the quality of their experience at IU has been lessened?" And they deserve the truth. Distorting factual information regarding the well-being of Hoosiers is not only unethical but downright dangerous."

Members of the New Voters Project target students around campus, helping them to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election. The project is a student-directed, nonpartisan political organization, which is part of the nationwide Student Public Interest Research Group. Members of the New Voters Project look to get everyone on campus registered to vote. The group has registered more than 600,000 young voters nationally since its launch in 2003

Several recent IDS articles highlight a media trend by discussing problems caused by climate change and potential remedies, instead of debating the phenomenon's existence. This development represents a change that has taken place in the minds of Indiana undergraduates. Fewer students need to be convinced of climate change's impact, and most wonder "How can I become part of the solution?"

Calling herself a "landless wannabe farmer," she said Hill offered good information on the issue. Her friend Isabel Estevez, a student at Indiana University, agreed. Last Friday, Indiana Public Interest Research Group took students to Indianapolis to interview Republican presidential hopeful John McCain about his position on global warming as part of a national campaign called "What's Your Plan?" The group, which holds meetings on campus, aims to convince presidential candidates to pay attention to younger voters. INPIRG Treasurer Lindsey Lucenta said that the Internet plays a large role in reaching the 18-30 demographic.

The Indiana Public Interest Research Group is an organization dedicated to improving the environment and promoting citizen involvement. The group took pictures of 47 people, including IU Dean of Students Dick McKaig, with thought bubbles next to their heads to compile a visual petition that will be sent to the 2008 presidential candidates. The petition is part of INPIRG's 'What's your plan?" campaign.

The Indiana Public Interest Research Group is a student-run, student-funded nonprofit organization at IU. We are currently working on two student-activist campaigns: Hunger and Homelessness and the Campus Climate Challenge. Last spring, we raised nearly $10,000 to combat poverty on the local and global levels during our Hunger Cleanup event and have reprised that effort this year, while bringing such events as last fallâ??s Global Warming Awareness Week and the upcoming Earth Day Extravaganza to campus.
