Global Warming Solutions
It is time to unleash the power of clean energy! Right now, we have a huge opportunity to make a real impact on global warming through The American Clean Energy
and Securities Act. The ACES bill is the first national cap of global warming pollution in the country. President Obama needs our help to make sure it passes through the Senate past the big oil and dirty coal lobby. Neither Senator Bayh nor Senator Lugar have committed to voting for the bill. We need to show them that Hoosiers are behind the ACES bill by places hundreds or calls in to their office's and gaining media coverage on our global warming events.
Hunger and Homlessness
INPIRG will be running a Hunger and Homelessness campaign in this time of great need. INPIRG students volunteer in shelters, raise money for food banks, and participate in educational events on campus. Our biggest event of the year is the Hunger Cleanup, which takes place each April. The Hunger Cleanup is a serve-a-thon, where students get people to sponsor them for each hour that they volunteer on a Saturday. This way, students provide both people-power in the form of volunteers, and money to help support the organizations that need it most.
Student Consumer Action Center
INPIRG is launching a new program this semester! The Student Consumer Action Center will research the biggest rip-offs students face - whether it be textbooks, cell phone plans, or pizza - and make monthly reports teaching their fellow students how to save money and become more educated consumers. We'll also be surveying the local stores and restaurants, finding the best deals in Bloomington for IU students and the community. Our interns and volunteers will be working with these local business owners, local TV stations and newspapers, and our elected officials to make sure that students are protected as consumers.
Public Transit
Transportation is the main reason for our dependence on oil and makes up a huge portion of our global warming pollution; a lack of alternative options for transportation has led to worsening traffic. Unfortunately, plans for more and better public transportation languish on the drawing board because powerful developers and road-building lobbies have convinced the government has spent nine times more on highway subsidies than on transit since 1956. Light rail, clean bus systems, and other public transportation should play a greater part in America’s transportation future. INPIRG will be working to gain public support on our transportation principals and to expand our public transportation system.
